Ethics Trainings
"Know Thyself"
This theme of ancient wisdom was a cornerstone of Greek culture and philosophy. Today, for the successful body therapist, it is a vital component in client relationships, business practices, professionalism, and the creation of ethical boundaries. This uniquely designed ethics training fulfills all of the NCBTMB re-certification requirements, and allows you to explore your personal preferences, professional skills, and focus on creating a successful practice that embodies your inner wisdom. Participants will be guided through group exercises, interactive processing, the constructive feedback model, and a reflective look at how conscious, honorable bodywork can be achieved and accelerated. Before we can “become who we are” as Nietzsche suggests, it is an exciting first step to “Know Thyself” and deepen our relationship to our clients and to ourselves.
"The Shadow"
What are boundaries? Are they rules, regulations and commandments? But more importantly, what happens beyond boundaries? Is there a personal and professional context for ethical boundaries as they relate to our personal values as bodywork professionals? In this ethics workshop, we will explore boundary conscious behavior in relation to Carl Jung’s concept of the Shadow”. Shadow issues such as intimacy, scope of practice, bodywork fundamentalism, and the use of power will be explored in small group discussions. Our goal is to develop a deeper sense of self-service and the use of power in our helping profession.
Myofascial & Clinical Approaches
Shoulder & Arm
There is “shoulder work ahead” for all participants in this hands-on workshop dealing with strain, overuse and myofascial imbalance at the shoulders and arms. We will explore the triple shoulder imbalance of postural distortion often found in bodyworkers, hairdressers and athletes. We will examine patterns of strain, and present effective myofascial techniques and therapeutic muscle stretching to rebalance the shoulder and normalize tendonosis problems within the arm. This workshop will provide you with skills to not only help your clients but hopefully to add pain free years to your practice of therapeutic massage. You might just find this training the perfect solution to the overuse injuries of your clients, and of your own patterns of personal strain and overuse. Learn a new and elegant form of bodywork!
Thoracic Cage
Whether your massage practice is stress reduction or clinical problem solving, this hands-on class will offer you a useful set of skills to enhance respiratory function. Drawing on the work of British osteopath Phillip Latey, this class details the role of primary and accessory muscles of respiration, emotional ramifications, and how to clinically enhance three dimensional breathing. If you encounter clients with fibromyalgia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders, you may notice thoracic fixations, a depressed sternum and dysfunctional patterns of respiration. With a special emphasis on the three paired serratus muscles, you will learn hands-on skills to unlock patterns of thoracic cage armoring in support of functionally effective respiration. Become inspired!
Head, Neck and Upper Back
This exclusive clinical workshop is designed for bodyworkers committed to bringing their skills to the highest standard of excellence. Instructed by Chicago School of Massage Therapy founder and educator Bob King, the course provides you with hands-on skills and clinical expertise that you can immediately bring to your practice for quicker and more lasting results. Highlights of this intensive training include:
• Anatomical review and Cadaver Video Presentation
• Functional and Structural Assessment Techniques
• Illustrated manuals, research articles, and coursework
• Tableside assistance and supervision
• Certificate of Continuing Education
• Anatomically precise clinical hands-on skills
• Receive skillful bodywork in a safe and relaxing environment
Hands-on skills include myofascial, neuromuscular, and muscle energy techniques along with self-stabilization measures for optimal clinical results.
Low Back
Develop your hands-on skills in the treatment of postural low back pain! This intensive workshop provides you with assessment techniques and hands-on skills for mechanical low back pain and dysfunction. Participants receive an illustrated workshop manual, peer-reviewed clinical articles by the presenter, tableside instruction and skillful bodywork approaches for sciatica, lateral pelvic tilt, and lower crossed syndromes. Robert King’s Clinical Massage for Low Back Pain training includes functional assessment for postural and phasic muscle imbalance and self-care measures for core stabilization all presented in a positive and supportive learning environment.
Lower Extremities
This profound intensive will uncover the powerful linkage between foot structure and postural distortion. We will evaluate the legs and feet as the structural platform of support for the body and then evaluate and clinically rectify patterns of compensation and strain. The Postural Pronation Syndrome will be presented showing the relationship between faulty foot structure, gait mechanics and typical overuse injuries encountered in clinical settings. Specific myofascial release techniques will be taught to compliment lower extremity alignment and self stabilization. This is an ideal workshop to increase your clinical skills, postural analysis and for helping clients with stubborn back and hip pain along with overuse injuries of the leg and feet.
Therapeutic Muscle Stretching
Originally developed from early osteopathy, naprapathy, and the Ling systems of remedial gymnastics, Therapeutic Muscle Stretching (TMS) utilizes manual movement as a therapeutic modality. Bob King will present body mobilization techniques and specific stretches you can immediately implement in your practice to gently and effectively retrain the neuromuscular system. TMS is an ideal addition to myofascial bodywork, relaxation approaches, and trigger point therapy. Learn, receive and practice these techniques in an environment of safety and support. Wear loose-fitting clothing and come prepared to practice non-invasive, easy-to-learn myofascial decompression techniques for the whole body.
